This month, we’d like to introduce you to Emily Hedlund! Emily attends Ivy Tech Community College, where she is studying Fire Science. She is currently a licensed EMT and plans to become a firefighter, and has a goal to join the Coast Guard next year. Emily works as a lifeguard and swim instructor for Carmel Swim Academy. We asked her a few questions so you could get to know her better.

How did you start working with the Carmel Swim Academy?
“I started working for CSA because I wanted to lifeguard, teach lessons, and work year-round by a pool. I have lifeguarded for four years and have been a competitive swimmer since the age of eight. So this was the best place for me to work.”

How would you describe the culture at the Carmel Swim Academy?
“The culture at CSA is very positive. It is an environment that fosters a better outcome to your daily life.”

Why do you think swim lessons are important?
“Swim lessons are important because everyone needs to know how to swim. It is not only an important life skill, but you can swim during your whole life span. Learning the different ways to move your body, breathe, and feel comfortable in water is very rewarding and necessary for everyone.”

What do you like about working at the Carmel Swim Academy?
“What I most like about teaching is seeing the progress within each lesson or within a couple of sessions. The growth of skills and confidence is what I love about teaching. When kids are excited to overcome their fears and feel comfortable in the CSA environment progress is seen.
I like the early morning shifts at CSA. They get me ready for the day and I get to see familiar faces as they clock in their laps.”
